Upcoming Server upgrades

Toward the end of last year cPanel 11 was released and installed on all Jersey Web Hosting servers. This updated version of cPanel allowed the option for MYSQL 5, the newest release, to now be installed on our shared Hosting Servers. Last year it was also announced that support for PHP version 4 is now discontinued, as of December 31, 2007.

In order to keep JWH's servers as up to date as possible, our team will begin to reconfigure the server your website is hosted. After the upgrades MYSQL 5 will be the default version of MYSQL, and PHP 5 will be the default version of PHP. These newest versions of MYSQL and PHP have already been tested and are currently installed on our newest servers. This update has caused no new issues to those servers and the clients on those servers.

PHP 5 is the default version to parse documents ending with the following extensions:

.php
.phps
.phtml
.php5

All servers will be upgraded in upcoming weeks.

Most applications should run perfectly fine under MYSQL 5 as well as PHP5, however some of our clients may find that their applications do not work properly and require MYSQL 4 or PHP 4. It is recommended that you check with your application vendors to ensure that the application is compatible with version 5, and update your software if necessary.

If no updates are available for the software you are using, you will be able to continue using PHP 4. On the day of the change, place the following commands into a file named '.htaccess' under the root directory for the application which requires PHP version 4.

You may also change the version of PHP inside your cPanel. You may do this by first logging into your cPanel account. Then navigate to the link named "PHP Configuration". Once there, there will be a drop down menu at the top that will allow you to change the default version of PHP.

Action application/x-httpd-php4 /cgi-sys/php4
AddType application/x-httpd-php4 .php

As always, you can contact our Technical Support via our helpesk from within your client area if you have any questions or issues on the day of this change, or even before this change occurs.

SECURITY ALERT: Horde arbitrary file inclusion vulnerability

If you do not use 'webmail' to read your email from the server, this does not apply to you.

An arbitrary file inclusion vulnerability has been discovered in the Horde
webmail application. At present, we can confirm that this security
vulnerability in question affects Horde 3.1.6 and earlier. Based on
incomplete information at this time, we also believe this affects Horde
Groupware 1.0.4 and earlier as well (cPanel does not use Horde Groupware
at this time).

cPanel customers should update their cPanel and WHM servers immediately to
prevent any chance of compromise. The patch will be available in builds
11.18.2 and greater (or 11.19.2 and greater for EDGE systems). The updated
builds will be available immediately to all fast update servers. The
builds will be available to all other update servers within one hour of
this posting.

To check which version of cPanel and WHM is on your server, simply log
into WebHost Manager (WHM) and look in the top right corner, or execute
the following command from the command line as root:

/usr/local/cpanel/cpanel -V

You can upgrade your server by navigating to 'cPanel' -> 'Upgrade to
Latest Version' in WebHost Manager or by executing the following from the
command line as root:

/scripts/upcp

It is recommended that all use of Horde 3.1.6 and earlier be stopped (on
cPanel and non-cPanel systems alike) until Horde updates can be applied.
You can disable Horde on your cPanel system by unchecking the box next to
'Server Configuration' -> 'Tweak Settings' -> 'Mail' -> 'Horde Webmail'
within WHM, and saving the page with the new settings.

We would like to thank HostGator for providing the initial details in
their report of this vulnerability.

Your control panel (cPanel) has been updated.

The control panel that is the primary tool used to manage and control the way your web hosting package has been updated.  The new version of the control panel is Version 11.

If you are interested in utilizing the new layout and features of this control panel update, you must change the skin to 'x3'.

Please login to your control panel at http://yourdomain.com/cpanel or http://yourdomain.com:2082 with your username and password.  Once logged in you should select " Switch Theme" and select 'x3'.  Once you have selected the new theme there are some video tutorials that you may watch if you have questions about the new layout and functions.

You may always switch back to the old version if you prefer.

One of the best new features is the 'Web Disk'.  The Web Disk allows you to create a shortcut to your account on your computer's desktop.  This shortcut can be used for you to drag and drop files into a specific directory for safekeeping or you can use it to upload new versions of your website without requiring you to log into cPanel.

If you have questions that aren't answered by the 'Getting Started Wizard' feel free to open a support ticket,

JWH
